Combining vibrant hues with complimentary cooler values will be the main focus in painting large florals that sing! Big brushes create bold strokes while learning the art of painting on medium to large canvases.
By the end of this course, you will have confidence in painting large florals. Combining bright and bold colours. Creating high impact compositions.
Pre-requisites: Experience in painting with acrylic paints.
Basic knowledge of colour and composition
Some familiarity with using larger brushes
Materials: see attached document
Please note, this is an in-studio program.
Please contact programs@niagarapumphouse.ca for any questions.
PAINTS:
My preferred acrylic paint colours are listed below. Please don't feel obliged to get them all. I like Golden and/or Liquitex brand
I tend to use heavy body paints as colours are sharper and richer
Bring whatever you have as well.
Titanium white
Primary magenta
Hansa yellow/Indian yellow - if not available any shade of cadmium yellow will do
cadmium red (perfect for poppies!)
Burnt sienna
Ultramarine blue
Paynes gray (optional)
Teal
.3mm light blue Posca acrylic pen
PAINTING SURFACES - suggested sizes are below (you can use whatever you think works best for you). Please prep your surface with a layer of semi transparent warm toned acrylic colour ahead of the class. I usually lay on burnt sienna, yellow ochre or dull crimson.
Gallery width canvas, canvas paper or gessoed wood panels are ideal.
Two 12" x 16".
One 20" x 20" or larger. If you already have painting surfaces close to this size please feel free to use them.
BRUSHES
3 Flat tipped synthetic angled brushes ranging from 1/2 - 1.5"(Zen brand brushes upwards of $5 from DeSerres work quite well).
A minimum 2" paddle brush (De Serres) is a great addition for larger paintings
Assorted palette knives (narrow and long as well as shorter) - plastic ones are fine.
DRAWING TOOLS
Coloured chalk or drawing tool of your choice
OTHER ITEMS
Palette for acrylics (disposable pad is easier)
J cloths, ruler,
¾" - 1" Green or masking tape if using paper.
Table or floor easel (if not available in studio)
2 empty yogurt tubs for water (if not available in studio)
PHOTO REFERENCES
I will supply a photo reference for each student. I feel it is generally easier to grasp the concepts if you follow from my demo photo. For more intermediate students you can work from your own reference photos if you wish.

My early art training has been at the Ottawa School of Art and at Algonquin University, Ottawa. I paint in bright and bold contemporary impressionism. As an award winning artist I'm immersed year round in my world of exhibiting my work in multiple galleries, private art commissions and teaching.
