Raymond Martin was born and spent most of his life in the Cabbagetown neighbourhood of Toronto, Ontario. He received his formal art training at the Ontario College of Art and with private tutorship with many qualified and outstanding artists. Raymond was one of the original group of artists that came together to form the Toronto Watercolour Society and as a member won several awards in their juried shows. The artist was also invited to include his work in pastels in International Pastel Magazine. His works can be found in collections throughout the United States and Canada.

Raymond worked in a wide variety of mediums including: pen & ink, charcoal, oils, watercolour and pastels. He drew much of his inspiration and influence from many artists; however, his favourites included the Group of Seven, not in painting style, but in their choice of subjects. He was a great admirer of impressionism and artists such as John Singer Sargent, Robert Henri and Emile` Gruppe.

Raymond was a beloved instructor of Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre where he taught pastel, oil, and transparent watercolour painting. His works were featured in solo and group exhibitions in the main gallery.
