I have had the freedom to make art since I was a boy, when I was given the paintbox of artist W J Hopkinson after he died. I taught myself how to paint - how paint works and conversely what does not work. I alternated between abstraction and realism until I settled on abstraction as the ideal direction for me to create compelling art. I eventually began working in 3 dimensions, carving and painting pieces of wood. Today my two-dimensional work includes painting, collage and photography and my sculptures are assemblies made from a variety of materials including metal, wood and clay.

My objectives have been very consistent over my professional career – beauty, balance, desire and humour are ongoing themes in all of my work. I look for balance between the primitive and sophisticated, and seek inspiration in beauty, most often through the female form or through landscape.

I want to create something with integrity in both form and idea, that has meaning to me and clearly goes beyond just a grouping of diverse pieces or images. Sometimes they are figurative and sometimes they are allusions to something abstract that challenges the viewer's imagination. For many years my paintings were Modernist in nature, while my collages were more Romantic. My current work in both two and three-dimensions is more personal and perhaps can best be described as Modern Romanticism.

I have been exhibiting professionally since first appearing in a cross-country survey show, Forum 76, in Montreal in 1976. More recently I was represented by the Moore Gallery in Toronto, and lately I have participated in shows at the 13th Street Gallery in St. Catharine's. Our Niagara-on-the-Lake property includes a gallery space 'Ronald Boaks Fine Art' which allows me to present my diverse collection of work in ongoing changing exhibitions.
