Rick takes his inspiration from the works of artists such as Vermeer, J.L. David, J.S. Sargent and 19th century Realist painters, whose paintings range between naturalism and impressionism, where a portrait or figure painting might contain a narrative or a landscape that focuses the viewers attention.

In his own work, He identifies some aspect of a narrative or landscape that interests him, and then works to build the detail of the composition so as to support the idea in his mind, in a way that viewers will hopefully understand. This involves selective focus and details that a viewer might never see, but are nevertheless an important part of the whole.
