Artist Statement
While visitors often admire the vineyards, orchards, wineries and farms that define our area, the individuals behind that work are less frequently seen. This exhibition seeks to shift the focus from the harvest itself to the people who make it possible. Each portrait offers an opportunity to pause, connect and recognize the skill, resilience and commitment embodied in these faces.
Created from life-inspired reference photographs, the paintings aim to capture more than a likeness. They explore character, experience and the deep relationship between people and the land they steward. Thoughtful expressions and moments of quiet pride become visual reminders of lives shaped by seasons, labour and tradition.
As a portrait artist, I am interested in the stories carried within a face. Portraiture has the unique ability to create connection, inviting viewers to look closely and engage with another person's humanity. In this exhibition, each painting stands as both an individual story and part of a larger narrative about community, stewardship and belonging.
FACE IT! is ultimately an expression of gratitude. It acknowledges those whose efforts often happen behind the scenes and whose contributions enrich the cultural, agricultural and economic life of Niagara. By bringing these individuals into the spotlight, the exhibition invites viewers to consider the people behind the products we enjoy and the landscapes we cherish.
