The Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre is an art gallery and studio located in a heritage building circa 1891 on the banks of the Niagara River. The pumping station supplied water to the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake until 1983. The Pumphouse Art Centre Association was formed in 1990 and through community effort, the building was restored and converted to a visual arts centre in 1994. The Niagara Pumphouse offers year-round educational programs, exhibitions and events promoting interests in the visual arts.
The Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre is a not-for-profit community-based organization that supports and advances lifelong learning opportunities in the arts through our school and galleries, emphasizing community involvement and collaboration. Our mission is to engage, enrich and celebrate our diverse and growing population through the visual arts.
As THE visual arts hub of Niagara-on-the-Lake, The Pumphouse Arts Centre is dedicated to providing a nurturing environment for artists at all levels of their creative journey, and encouraging participation in the arts through advocacy, education and outreach, exhibition, and serving as a vital creative resource for the community. It also strives to provide a cultural leadership role by participating on the Town’s Cultural Committee and contributing to the development of the Cultural Plan, especially in the area of public art policy development.
We believe that the arts are essential to human development and the well-being of society, and that artistic expression is a powerful transformative element in the community, building identity, cohesion, and prosperity. The Pumphouse is a place to learn and grow and serves as a vibrant source of cultural enrichment and inspiration to the community. We are committed to providing an accessible, equitable, and respectful arts centre that represents the ideals and aspirations of our unique community.
Strategic Goals & Priorities
The Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre is a registered charitable organization operated by a Chair, a volunteer Board of Directors and employed staff consisting of a Director of the Arts Centre and office administrators. Its continued success and growth depends upon membership, fundraising, sponsorships, and the ongoing support of the community.
In 2015, the Board of The Pumphouse Arts Centre invited its members and the broader community to provide input into the establishment of priorities and goals by participating in a series of “New Initiatives Workshops”. We also met with a variety of community stakeholders. After analysis of the responses collected, the following goals and priorities have been established for the period 2016-2020.
1. Create a strong ‘brand’ or identity as an impactful community building cultural assets within the Niagara Region.
2. Increase revenue by 10 % annually and be in a positive net income position by 2020.
3. Strengthen our organizational structure (infrastructure).
4. Expand programs and services to better meet the growing needs of our community and more effectively engage all our stakeholders.
5. Identify and continue to develop strategic partnerships to make more efficient use of resources and better coordinate with other cultural institutions in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
