Artist's Statement
My paintings are a celebration of nature and a recognition of the healing properties that its beauty offers us. The ancient Mystery teachings held that beauty is essential to the natural unfoldment of the human soul. In my paintings I aim to express this beauty, and to allow a space of contemplation and of peace. In our frenetic world I feel that this is more important than ever, and that beauty can serve as an uplifting reminder of the preciousness of our planet.
I like to describe my painting style as Poetic Realism. I work from my own photos and from my imagination. I aim to create a highly realistic image from afar, and then to have the abstracted texture and brushstrokes take over when one comes in close.
I paint with many glazes of both transparent and opaque hues, building up a depth of colour and texture. I shift from thick paint applications to delicate touches, which creates a wonderful surface of lively stokes to explore. Working up the multiple layers of colour glazes brings me much joy as I watch the images appearing more fully with each stage of the process. I hope to transfer that feeling of delight to the viewer as they take in these painted worlds!
I came across the idea that a painting can slow down time. The onlooker can wander through the painted image at leisure, following the colour changes, brushstrokes and light effects and be drawn into a timeless experience.
