Nature's Heartbeat

A solo exhibit by artist Lynda Flanagan, demonstrates the connection between humans and nature, our interdependence on each other. Through appreciation for nature's beauty, the bounty it provides and its resilience, we as humans should take note of our reliance on what the earth provides. Our heartbeats are intertwined, one cannot survive without the other and it is my hope that presented nature in its glory through my contemporary still, people will continue to grow an appreciation for nature and a deep respect. The theme behind the heartbeat is resilience, reliance, connection and renewal.

Artist Statement

I paint using bright colours and broad sweeping brushstrokes to evoke an emotional connection between my landscapes and the viewer. Each piece aspires to elicit connections and feelings to nature; my paintings are not named after places, but titled to provoke sentiment and reflection. Humans and nature share deep roots and are bonded through mutual reliance and a need for balance. I want my interpretations and looseness of brushstrokes to encourage the audience to relate to a familiar time and place, enabling them to recall specific emotions and feelings.
I use acrylic paint and apply the paint in quick, loose strokes allowing for fast layering and outlining of the landscape being portrayed. Rapid movement with my brush heightens the mood of my work; reflections in water and clouds in the skies are often blocked in first as they convey my excitement for each new piece.
I have an Honour Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from McMaster University and have the pleasure of painting full-time in my at-home studio in Hamilton, Ontario. Through my interpretations of nature and the world's natural elements, I hope to bridge my journey and joy of nature with that of the viewer.
