Be part of an art installation honouring essential workers!

March 24, 2022 marks the 2-year anniversary of COVID lockdowns in both Ontario and Canada.

Please join the Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre team as we set out to create 1,000 origami cranes to honour our essential workers who have contributed to our health and safety throughout COVID.

As a volunteer of the Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre, we invite you to create paper cranes! They will be part of an art installation available for public viewing this spring.

Why Paper Cranes? An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by the gods. Some stories believe one is granted happiness and eternal good luck. The crane in Japan is one of the mystical or holy creatures and is said to live for a thousand years. That is why 1,000 cranes are made, one for each year. In some stories, it is believed that the 1,000 cranes must be completed within one year and they must all be made by the person(s) who are to make the wish at the end. They are usually created by friends, classmates, or colleagues as a collective effort.
