As a visual artist, I dream that I might replicate the magnificent imagery of the world, and by doing so, remind others of their own core decency. My wish is to re-ignite the wonder and curiosity we feel every day when we open ourselves to what the world offers to us. Each day, I try to experience what American author and Nobel Laureate John Steinbeck described as awe, humility, and joy.

I try to sense everything as though I were becoming aware of it for the first time, with a feeling of awe and wonder. The beauty and majesty of the universe amaze and transform me, leaving me insatiably curious. This curiosity is my most fundamental means of survival, for the more I know, the safer I am.

As a scientist, I formulate theories – possible answers to the questions raised by curiosity. The discoveries I make teach me what I ought to believe and how I ought to act. This process makes me aware that the more I know, the more I have yet to learn. I am not overwhelmed or depressed by this. On the contrary, I continually question supposition, and, if I can, transform it into knowledge.

Contributing this knowledge to the world gives meaning to my life. It is then that I feel the joy of being part of something much greater. The more I invest in what needs to be done, the more passionate and fulfilled my life becomes.
