Overview

In this four part program, various Oil Portrait Painting methods will be reviewed using traditional tools and materials. A realistic painting will be done in oils and using a live model. Concentration will be on the Alla Prima method (a direct method of applying paint in a short sitting), a limited Rembrandt palette, blending and mixing of skin tones and glazing techniques. The program will include a review of preparation, proportional drawing, colour values, mixing a colour palette, building forms and finishing. Participants will benefit from personalized instruction and feedback from the artist in completing their portrait.

-16 x 20 canvas or gesso Masonite wood panel
-8 x 10 canvas
-Oil Paints
-Titanium white (or flake white)
-Yellow ochre
-Burnt Umber
-Burnt sienna
-Ivory black
-Cadmium red
-Optional colours: ultramarine blue, sap green, raw umber
-Liquin oil medium or other medium (linseed oil)
-Assortment of brushes
-Odorless solvent
-Palette board
-Palette knife
-Paper towel

Instructor - George Doros

George Doros is a Niagara resident, graduate of Ontario College of Art, Guelph University, and Brock University. He is a Visual Arts Educator /Consultant, Workshop Presenter, and Oil Portrait Painter, and studied with New York portrait artist Daniel Greene.
