Overview

Beginning with foundational relief printing methods and progressing into layered processes such as screen printing or kitchen lithography, students will build technical skills while developing their own visual language. The program will conclude with a collaborative print exchange, giving each student the opportunity to leave with a unique portfolio of artwork created by their peers.

Day 1: Developing the Image & Relief Printing Foundations: Students will begin by designing a key image — a simple but impactful line drawing that will become the foundation for their work throughout the program. They will learn how to transfer their design onto a lino block, safely use carving tools, and apply essential printmaking techniques. Once their blocks are carved, students will experiment with inking and hand-printing methods to produce a successful relief print.

Day 2: Layering, Texture & Screen Printing: Building from the prints created on Day 1, students will explore how layering can add depth, detail, and visual complexity to an image. Using small screens, brushes, and screen filler, students will create a second printed layer designed to register directly over their original block print. Through this process, they will gain hands-on experience with screen printing techniques while experimenting with colour, texture, and composition.
