Students engage in composition studies using techniques such as cropping, the rule of thirds, and negative space to better understand how visual decisions shape meaning. These are supported by observational exercises that strengthen the ability to see, analyze, and quickly capture form.
The program also emphasizes idea generation. Students respond to prompts through concept sketching and develop thumbnail studies that explore multiple ways of elevating an "ordinary object" through composition, perspective, and interpretation.
By the end of this course, students leave with a new understanding of the sketchbook—not as a diary of finished drawings, but as a testing ground. A place to experiment, iterate, and think visually. A gymnasium for ideas where creative muscles are built through practice.
Pre-requisites: none
Materials: all materials are included at a value of $25 with registration.
Please note, this is an in-studio program.
