Celebrate Culture Days! Oluseye will offer a collaborative community installation which responds to southwest Ontario's history as a part of Underground Railroad— a network of escape routes through which enslaved African-Americans became free people. Oluseye shares that the braided hair patterns of enslaved people often contained escape maps, understood by the enslaved peoples but not by their captors. Inspired by these patterns, Oluseye will create an installation created from an enlarged photograph of a young man's braided hairstyle, inspired by escape maps hidden in the braids of enslaved African Americans.
Through this event, participants will get to engage with the artist of the work as well as gain experience in his photo transferring techniques.
Presented in partnership with the Ontario Culture Days.
This program is part of the Ontario Culture Days 2025 Creatives in Residence series.
Open to all—by donation or pay-what-you-can.
